THERESA COLUMBUS is a performance artist, filmmaker and creator of poetic plays. her work is wildly colorful, emotive and bursting with energy, yet, delicately nuanced with layer upon layer of paradoxical meaning and evocative language. she will be presenting: PLEASURE CLUB, a short-play and MEGAJOY, a video.
CHRISTINE FERRERA is a painter, performer and videographer. her work often combines media counter-posing live and video performance, satire and sincerity. in a self-reflexive tangle, she often blurts out her worst fears. she will be presenting; GOOGLE PERFORMANCE ART VIDEO, a performance/installation, and AMATEUR NIGHT, a video and performance.
PLEASURE CLUB, 2012, play, 25 minutes. dangerously walking the line between corny, sexy, funny, and abstruse, pleasure club tells the tale of little miss treetops, who unwittingly finds herself on-stage at a comedy club. treetops mistakenly thought she was invited to perform at a “pleasure club” – a place where, instead of comediennes telling jokes, people share enjoyable and pleasant ideas with the audience. humorously revealing structures that characterize society, pleasure club can transform any space into one that playfully invites new ways of actualizing enjoyment.
MEGAJOY, 2010, video, 11 minutes. mega joy is a collage of video documenting live performances, personal conversations and confessional improvisations. scripted dialogue and songs are juxtaposed with off-the-cuff banter on and off-stage. at times embarrassingly intimate and self-conscious, the artist ultimately embraces the “mega joy” that comes from exciting people working together and accessing the world of ideas through art.
GOOGLE PERFORMANCE ART VIDEO is a performance/installation that depicts an absurd conversation between two women. the artist plays one character live on-stage interacting with her projected video counterpart. she alternates roles in a series of vignettes. as the characters discuss art, their power dynamic mirrors the self-undermining emotional process inherent in creative work and the universal tension between longing and fear in relationships.
AMATEUR NIGHT is a video and performance. the video consists of lines from an amateur comedy act recorded from audio dictionary websites and juxtaposed with video stills of the comedian pausing for laughter. the performance aspect of this piece is a live stand-up routine in which the artist performs jokes as AWKWARD PAUZEZ the digital comic. in a similar manner, she begins a joke live on-stage but the punch line is delivered with computer-generated words.
GUILT IS THE GLUE is a re-performance by JOSEPH RAVENS. the story told was written long ago. it is being revisited for this event.
